SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 25th-ranked University of San Diego men's tennis team won their first match of the West Coast Conference Championships on Thursday afternoon by posting a 4-0 victory over Portland at the Barnes Tennis Center. The win was USD's second over the Pilots this season.
The Toreros (16-7, 6-2 WCC) got things started with doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Thibaut Visy and Patrick Pohlmann recorded an 8-5 win, while Ciaran Fitzgerald and Nikola Bubnic tallied an 8-1 victory of their own.
In singles, No. 51 Bubnic clinched the win for the Toreros with his 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1. No. 93 Pohlmann won, 6-1, 7-5, while Clarke Spinosa earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 to cap off the USD wins on the day.
The Toreros, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, move on to face No. 2 seed Santa Clara on Friday in the semifinals. USD is looking to return the favor against the Broncos after losing at Santa Clara on Apr. 15. Friday's match is slated to start at 10:30 am from the Barnes Tennis Center.
