SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Senior defender
Lexi Deol of the University of San Diego women's soccer team has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday morning.
Deol, a 5-9 defender from Ladera Ranch, Calif., played a major role in leading USD to a 2-0 record this past week. USD picked up a 1-0 upset win over No. 12 Texas A&M on Wednesday, and they rallied from a 2-goal deficit to win 3-2 against Minnesota on Friday. In the win over Texas A&M, Deol recorded an assist on the game-winning goal, as she sent a through ball from the back line to Emily Dillon, who then cruised behind the Aggie defense and scored an easy goal to give USD the victory. Not only did Deol assist on the game-winning goal, but she helped the Torero defense post its first shutout of the season, and against a very potent Texas A&M offense.
Deol then followed up that performance with a game-winning goal in Friday's 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Minnesota. Deol's goal helped USD cap off a two-goal first-half deficit to win in double-overtime, with just 1:26 remaining in the period. Deol started the match on defense, then at halftime, head coach Ada Greenwood moved Deol up top, and she sparked the Torero offense to a 2-goal half, forcing overtime, in which she then scored the game-winner in the 108th minute of play.
Deol and the Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head to Los Angeles to take part in the Trojan Invitational. USD will take on Washington State at 1 p.m. on Friday, and will close out the weekend on Sunday with a 2 p.m. match against USC.
