The University of San Diego men's basketball staff, under the direction of sixth-year head coach Bill Grier, announced their 2012-13 schedule today. The Toreros will open up their 15-game nonconference slate with five straight home games beginning with San Diego Christian on Friday, November 9th. That contest will be followed by USD's first-ever non-conference tournament in the Jenny Craig Pavilion with the five-day (Nov. 14-18), five-team NUCDF Basketball Challenge.

Joining San Diego in the NUCDF (National Urea Cycle Disorders Foundation) Basketball Challenge field will be Cal State University at Northridge, Northern Kentucky University, Siena College and Tulsa University. The Toreros will open up the tournament on Wednesday, November 14th, when they play host to Northern Kentucky.

"Hosting our own MTE (Multiple Team Event) will be a physical challenge, but we do get to play them all at home," said head coach Bill Grier. "We will play 4 games in 5 days against quality opponents. I look at this as a way to prepare for the WCC tournament by playing several games in a short period of time."

The Toreros will then play seven of their final ten non-conference games on the road beginning with four straight against UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 21), Montana (Nov. 24), Stephen F. Austin (Dec. 1) and Southern Utah (Dec. 4). Following home dates with Tulane (Dec. 8) and Arizona Christian (Dec. 11), USD will play at San Diego State on Dec. 15th, followed by two neutral-site games at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas against Oregon State (Dec. 22) and James Madison (Dec. 23). Following Christmas break the Toreros will close out the year with a home date against Morgan State on December 29th.

Added Grier, "We were able to put together a schedule that will challenge and prepare us for a very difficult WCC, while at the same time, give us an opportunity to be successful with a fairly young team. We have some very tough road games. SDSU on paper is a Top 15 team; Montana is once again picked as the pre-season favorite in the Big Sky as is Stephen F. Austin in the Southland Conference. Playing Oregon State and James Madison at the MGM in Las Vegas is exciting, yet both will be very difficult to play".

West Coast Conference play will begin on January 3rd with a home date against Portland. Additional WCC games scheduled for the Jenny Craig Pavilion include LMU (Jan. 17), Santa Clara (Jan. 26), Gonzaga (Feb. 2), BYU (Feb. 7), Saint Mary's College (Feb. 9), San Francisco (Feb. 28) and Pepperdine (Mar. 2). USD's road schedule in the WCC includes trips to San Francisco (Jan. 10), Pepperdine (Jan. 12), BYU (Jan. 19), Saint Mary's College (Jan. 24), LMU (Feb. 4), Santa Clara (Feb. 14), Portland (Feb. 21) and Gonzaga (Feb. 23).

The 2013 WCC Basketball Championship will once again be played at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada from March 6-11. Sunday, March 10th, will be the only off day with the championship game slated for Monday, March 11th.
