ON THE PITCH:The University of San Diego women's soccer team (4-7-0) opens up WCC play this weekend with a road match at San Francisco (5-3-3). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
LAST TIME OUT:The Toreros split a pair of 1-0 road matches over the weekend. They fell to No. 21 Long Beach State (7-3-0) last Friday evening after allowing a 70th minute goal. The Toreros had eight shot attempts in the second half with four of them on frame, but never could find the back of the net.
The Toreros bounced back Sunday to snap their winless streak defeating Cal State Northridge 1-0. The Toreros, who had lost to the Matadors 3-0 at home on August 19, got revenge with their lone goal coming from junior midfielder Kelley McCloskey off a Lauren Dotson assist. Freshman goalkeeper McKenna Tollackearned the second shutout of her season and career.
SCOUTING THE DONS:San Francisco enters the week with a 5-3-3 record. USF has yet to lose at home this season, posting a 4-0-2 record. Sophomore forward Mackenzie Krieser leads the team in scoring with six goals. Krieser was named to last year's All-WCC Freshman Team. Like the Toreros, the Dons have a freshman goalkeeper in the net; Madalyn Schiffel has started 10 of the Dons' 11 matches allowing only 12 goals while recording 62 saves and three shutouts. The Dons are coached by Jim Millinder, who is in his first season at USF. Millinder previously coached at USC for 11 seasons where he was twice named Pac-10 Coach of the Year. The Toreros are 16-4 all-time against USF. Their last loss came in October of 2005 when they fell to the Dons 2-1 in the second period of extra time.
WAITING FOR LEADING GOAL SCORER TO EMERGE: Four Toreros are tied for the team lead in goals. Sophomore Mariah Butera, junior Emily Dillon, junior Kelley McCloskey, and senior Sierra Ferreira all have two goals a piece accounting for eight of the Toreros 13 goals.
WCC PLAY SET TO KICK OFF:Saturday's match against San Francisco marks the first WCC match of the season for the Toreros The WCC currently has four teams in the SoccerTimes.com Coaches Poll: No. 10 BYU (9-1-0), No. 20 Santa Clara (6-2-3), No. 21 Portland (6-2-1), and No. 22 Pepperdine (7-3-0).
THE GREENWOOD FILE: Since taking over the San Diego women's soccer program in 2003, Ada Greenwoodhas upheld the rich soccer tradition that San Diego is known for and continues to build a successful and nationally recognized program. Just the third coach in USD's storied 16 year history, Greenwood has compiled an overall record of 94-67-18 in his seven seasons at the helm. As San Diego's top assistant from 1998-2002, Greenwood helped USD to a 66-30-5 record and four NCAA College Cup appearances. Since taking over the reigns as head coach, Greenwood has guided the Torero to five NCAA Tournament appearances including three straight from 2007-09.
