SAN DIEGO, Calif. -The No. 42 University of San Diego men's tennis team (12-7, 2-1) earned a huge 7-0 road win over their cross-town rival No. 43 San Diego State (13-7) Wednesday evening.
The Toreros were able got off to a good start and won the doubles point after winning all three matches. Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy won 8-3 at the No. 1 and then Ciaran Fitzgerald and Victor Pugliese took care of business with an 8-6 at the No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Toreros.
The Toreros had one of their most impressive performances of the season, winning all six singles matches. Romain Kalaydjian got it started with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 3, which No. 78 Clarke Spinosa followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 over No. 97 Derek Siddiqui. Freshman Uros Petronijevic clinched the win for the Toreros with a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 4.
With the match decided, the Toreros did not let up. Pugliese continued his breakout season with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 5, which Ciaran Fitzgerald followed up with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) victory at the No. 6. Thibaut Visy completed the shutout with a 6-3, 6-7 (7-0), 1-0 (11-9)
The Toreros return to their home courts and to WCC play when they host San Francisco Friday at 1:30 p.m.
