MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 41 University of San Diego men's tennis team (0-1) lost on the road to No. 12 Pepperdine (2-0) 4-1 Friday morning in what proved to be a singles battle.
Pepperdine, who entered the match with a No. 12 national ranking and a dual match win already under their belt, were able to get on the scoreboard first after winning the doubles point. The Toreros' Ciaran Fitzgerald and Andrew Raphaelson cruised past the Waves' Tom Hill and Alex Giannini at No. 3 winning 6-0. On No. 2 Pepperdine's David Sofaer and Pedro Leme equalized the score beating Geoffrey Fosso and Uros Petronijevic 6-3. For the deciding point, the Toreros battled a tight match, but got edged out by Waves' Alex Sarkissian and Francis Alcantara 6-5(7-4).
The Waves, behind the performance of 33rd ranked Alex Sarkissian, got the first singles point after he beat 27th ranked Clarke Spinosa 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Filip Vittek, in his first dual match, lost to Pepperdine's Francis Alcantara 6-3, 6-3. Fellow freshman Geoffrey Fosso got the Toreros on the board, a 6-4, 6-0 victory, at the No. 6 over RJ Evangelista.
However, The Waves would answer to clinch the match with a hard fought 6-1, 4-6, 6-5(7-5) win at the No. 5 over Andrew Raphaelson.
"We got down early and had to try and play from behind the whole match," Coach Brett Masi said after the match. "When you want to beat a team like them you need to get the upper-hand and we could never get that. Got to bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow. Another good opportunity against a good team."
The Toreros return to action against 33rd ranked Alabama, Saturday, January 25, at 10:00 a.m.
