SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego men’s tennis team finished up day one of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships held at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center and Crest Courts in Malibu, Calif. Although the Toreros broke even in the singles draw, junior Romain Kalaydjian and sophomore Alexandros Araouzos posted a convincing victory in doubles play.
In doubles, Kalaydjian and Araouzos were the sole win of the day due to the fact that they did not receive a bye. The tandem came out the gate fired up and picked up a decisive win over Milen Ianakiev and Jonas Meinzer of San Diego State 8-1.
The rest of the afternoon would include both ups and downs for the Toreros. Senior Ciaran Fitzgerald fell in a tight, two-set match against UCLA’s Ryoto Tachi 6-4, 6-3. Kalaydjian later dropped a straight set decision of the same score versus Ben Donovan of Cal Poly.
Although junior Jordan Angus was forced to retire due to injury, the remaining Toreros would advance deeper into the main draw. Junior Uros Petronijevic, who is currently ranked No. 121 in the nation, handedly defeated Teague Hamilton of UC Santa Barbara 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Geoffrey Fosso followed, getting the victory over Loyola Marymount’s David Doehring 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Filip Vittek also grabbed a win after USC’s Connor Farren withdrew.
The Toreros return to action tomorrow morning, October 19th, for doubles competition.
