MALIBU, Calif. – The University of San Diego men’s tennis team had a strong performance, day two at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships held at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center and Crest Courts in Malibu, Calif. The Toreros went undefeated in doubles play, while picking up three wins in singles.
Sophomore Filip Vittek continued to have a praiseworthy fall season, defeating UCLA’s Nikolas Ramadan 6-4, 6-0. No. 121 junior Uros Petronijevic followed, winning in an exhilarating, close three-set match against USC Trojan Tanner Smith 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. Senior Ciaran Fitzgerald also grabbed a win, defeating San Diego State’s Freddy Gelbrich 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation bracket.
Sophomore
Geoffrey Fosso faced top seeds, falling to No. 45 Bruin Gage Brymer 6-2, 6-1.
Doubles competition for the Toreros proved to be smooth sailing. Fosso and Vittek cruised past Jonathan Hammel and Sebastian Heim of UC Irvine 8-3, whereas Fitzgerald and Petronijevic handedly took the victory over cross-town rival Freddy Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens 8-4.
The Toreros look to continue their momentum tomorrow, October 19th, at 9:00 A.M. PT.
