MALIBU, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's tennis team completed their run at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships held at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. Two Torero doubles tandems made it to the quarterfinals of the main draw, while junior Uros Petronijevic advanced into the semifinal rounds.
On Sunday, both Petronijevic and sophomore Filip Vittek competed in the Round of 16. Vittek dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to UCLA's No. 13 Mackenzie McDonald. No. 121 Petronijevic faced a Bruin as well, defeating Joseph Di Giulio 6-4, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, Petronijevic continued his streak getting a big win over No. 45 Gage Brymer of UCLA once again, 6-3, 7-5.
In the consolation bracket, it was junior Romain Kalaydjian who found himself on a roll. Although sophomore Alexandros Araouzos and senior Ciaran Fitzgerald fell in the second round, Kalaydjian got the victory over Lucas Lexouer of Cal Poly 6-0, 1-6, 6-3. Later in the afternoon, Kalaydjian took down Loyola Marymount's Luke Bohuslav 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, the Toreros were unable to advance into the semifinals. No. 28 Vittek and junior Jordan Angus fell to USC's Jonny Wang and Eric Johnson 8-4. Fitzgerald and Petronijevic also went up against a Pac-12 contender, and were defeated 8-5.
Today's match-ups featured Petronijevic and Kalaydjian. Petronijevic, who had won 12 out of his last 13 matches going in, went head-to-head against No. 39 Jonny Wang of USC. Although winning the first set in a tiebreaker, Wang came back and eventually took the match 6-7, 6-4, 6-1. Kalaydjian finished the tournament strong, ending the consolation bracket with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Cal Poly's Devin Barber.
The Toreros have a brief break before returning to action October 29th for SoCal Intercollegiates, in Los Angeles, Calif.
