Nov. 10, 2014 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's rowing team had a striong showing at the San Diego Fall Classic this past weekend at Mission Bay. USD posted wins in all races they entered.
Despite the day starting late due to a dense fog, it didn't ruin the competitive spirit of the Toreros. The Varsity 8 boat of Torrey Ray, Rory Kew, Will Bastien, John Bacic, Henri Hicks, Parker Danz, Alex La Bruno, Nick Watson, Patrick McPolin, that competed in the Men's Open 8+ event, posted the fasted time on the water. USD won this event with a final time of 0:15:09, which was a full 16 seconds faster then the second place boat from cross-town rival UC San Diego.
USD's second boat in that same event, that consisted of Berkley Brown, Ryan Sandy, Taylor Terheggen, Konrad Altvater, Daniel Hearst, Ryan Root, Mike Mohrman, Brandon de Caussin Jack Pokalsky, was the fourth place finisher with a final time of 0:15:58.
The Novice 8 Torero boat that had Sophie Schuder, Chad Blenz, John Slater, Sam Stephens, Hayden Town, Spencer Currey, Parker Brooks, Andrew Thomas, also came in first place with a final time of 0:16:30 in the Men's Open Novice 8+ event. The Toreros were in fact so fast, that the second place boat from San Diego State was 35 seconds slower then USD.
The Toreros will return to the water on March 7, as they compete in the Newport Regatta.
