FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's basketball (4-2) team picked up a 75-65 win over Princeton University (2-4) Friday afternoon at the Wooden Legacy Tournament inside of Titan Gym. USD will now advance on to take on the winner of the Western Michigan and San Jose State game on Sunday at 11 a.m. to close out the tournament.
Johnny Dee paced the Torero offense with 29 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including hitting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Christopher Anderson was the second Torero in double-digit figures with 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the floor, while also dishing out seven assists. Brett Bailey also had a great game, as he recorded seven points, and pulled down a career-high nine rebounds. As a team, USD shot 42.6% from the field and out rebounded the Tigers 39-27.
In the first half, it was a back and forth battle over the first 6:30 of action. Then with USD trailing 12-10, a Duda Sanadze jumper sparked a 13-3 San Diego run that was bookended on a Bailey jumper with 8:23 to go.
USD then remained in control of the momentum and would go on to build up a lead to as many as 15 on a Dee jumper with 1:31 to go, before heading into the break up 12, at 40-28.
In the second half, USD and Princeton came out and began to trade basket-for-basket with USD maintaining a 12-15 point lead over the first 3:27 of action. The Tigers then used an 8-3 run over four minutes to pull back to within seven at 51-44 with 12:00 to go, forcing the Toreros to use a timeout.
Out of the break, USD went on a 9-4 run to regain a double-digit lead at 60-48 with 8:07 to go, however, Princeton then began to chip away at he lead and pulled to within four at 61-57 with 3:45 to go.
USD then closed out the game on an 11-5 run to claim the 75-65 win.
