COLUMBIA, S.C. - The No. 44 University of San Diego men's tennis team (3-3) fell to the No. 31 South Carolina Gamecocks (6-4) 4-3 in a tough loss Sunday afternoon at the Carolina Tennis Center.
The Gamecocks won the first match of the day taking down senior captain Clarke Spinosa and Freshman Filip Vittek 8-6. The Toreros would then answer with wins at No. 2 and 3. Sophomores Uros Petronijevic and Romain Kalaydjian defeated SC's Tsvetan Mihov and Thiago Pinheiro 8-5. Shortly after, junior doubles duo Ciaran Fitzgerald and Andrew Raphaelson could not be slowed down, defeating South Carolina's Andrew Adams and Sam Swank 8-5.
In singles play, the Gamecocks rebounded from the doubles point grabbing the first two matches. South Carolina's Chip Cox took down Fitzgerald 6-4, 6-4, while No. 75 Tsvetan Mihov knocked off No. 78 Spionsa 6-3, 7-5. Romain Kalaydjian continued to have a successful weekend defeating Gamecock's Kyle Koch 6-4, 7-5. Although the Toreros took the lead again after Petronijevic beat SC's Thiago Pinheiro 6-4, 6-4, South Carolina's Andrew Adams equalized the match defeating Vittek 6-3, 6-4.
The deciding point came down to court 6. After losing the first set 6-4, freshman Aaron Addison narrowly grabbed the second in a tight tiebreak. Gamecock's No. 88 Andrew Schafer pulled out the win, taking the third 6-3.
The Toreros return to action at home against No. 2 University of Southern California Thursday, February 27th at 11:00 a.m. PT in La Jolla, Calif.
