SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (6-8, 2-2 WCC) defeated WCC foe No. 72 Santa Clara Broncos (7-6, 2-2 WCC) in down-to-the-wire fashion Monday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
After taking the doubles point, the Toreros stepped up in what would be a stellar singles performance to secure the victory over the Broncos 4-3.
The Toreros came out the gate hungry in doubles, quickly getting leads on courts 2 and 3. Senior captain Anna Depenau and freshman Colomba DiFilippo knocked off Broncos' Delphine Rouvillois and Nicolette Wolny 8-2. This win marked the fifth victory in a row for the pair. Senior Idil Haciraifoglu and sophomore Mikayla Morkel-Brink finished off the Broncos getting an 8-4 victory over Stephanie Skaras and Elaine Chesoni.
The Broncos stayed motivated in singles - picking up three points at the No. 1, 3, and 4 spots. Despite the deficit, Depenau took back the momentum for the Toreros after defeating Santa Clara's Delphine Rouvillois 7-5, 6-3. Today's match was Depenau's first win at the No. 2 spot for the season and sixth singles win in a row. The Toreros continued to fight, pulling out thrilling three-set wins to clinch the match. Haciraifoglu took down Bronco's Nicolette Wolny 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-0, while freshman Janine Koleta came back and defeated Elaine Chesoni 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Toreros continue conference play this weekend at Pepperdine (Friday, 1:30 p.m.) and Loyola Marymount (Saturday, 1:30 p.m.).
