SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 66 University of San Diego men's tennis team (5-4) picked up their first win against WCC contender Loyola Marymount (4-5) Saturday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
After another strong doubles performance, the Toreros continued to roll past the Lions in singles - picking up a 5-2 win.
Ciaran Fitzgerald and Aaron Addison got the Toreros off to a great start, getting a convincing win over Lions' Luke Bohuslav and Cristobal Rivera 8-1. Court number one followed when 30th ranked Clarke Spinosa and Filip Vittek defeated LMU's Sebastian Bustamante and Todd Volmari 8-6. Spinosa and Vittek are currently 8-3 for the season thus far. Uros Petronijevic and Romain Kalaydjian completed the doubles sweep after knocking off Lions' David Doehring and Daniel Simko 8-4.
In singles play, Fitzgerald controlled the match early getting a victory over LMU's Othar Kordsachia. Fitzgerald went a perfect 4-0 in both singles and doubles for the week. Geoffrey Fosso followed in similar fashion, cruising past Lions' Luke Bohuslav 6-1, 6-1. Romain Kalaydjian also had a strong performance defeating Lions' Cristobal Rivera 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match.
While the Lions were able to pick up wins at the No. 4 and No. 2 spots, Spinosa narrowly ousted LMU's David Doehring 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(7).
The Toreros return to action Wednesday, March 12th at 3:00 p.m. PT in Moraga, Calif. to face St. Mary's College.
