SAN DIEGO, Calif. - It was a team effort as the No. 49 University of San Diego men's tennis team (11-7, 5-0 WCC) posted a convincing win over cross-town rival San Diego State (9-10) Wednesday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
The Toreros stormed out the gate in doubles, giving solid performances at the No. 1 and 2 spots. No. 46 Clarke Spinosa and Filip Vittek knocked off Aztec's Hunter Nicholas and Andranik Khachatryan, while sophomores Uros Petronijevic and Romain Kalaydjian defeated Freddy Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens 8-5 as well.
Vittek won his fourth match in a row 6-0, 6-1, to get the afternoon started off in singles play. Spinosa soon followed taking down Aztec's Thorsten Bertsch by an identical score. Petronijevic, who is on a three-match winning streak, dominated Freddy Gelbrich 6-2, 6-2 and clinched the match.
The remaining three matches would prove to be more of a battle for the Toreros. Raphaelson picked up the next point, getting a victory over Aztec's Juan Florez 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(4). While the Aztecs pulled out the third set at the No. 3 spot, Fitzgerald finished off the match on a high note defeating Andranik Khachatryan 6-3, 5-7, 1-0(9).
