COLLEGE STATION, Tx. - The No. 33 University of San Diego men's tennis team fell 4-2 to No. 45 Louisiana State Saturday afternoon in the first round of the annual ITA Men's Kick-Off Weekend at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at Texas A&M. Although the first match of the dual season did not go in favor of the Toreros, they will have a chance to bounce back tomorrow, January 24th at 10:00 a.m. - PT.
In doubles play, the Tigers' Chris Simpson and Tam Trinh grabbed momentum early defeating senior Ciaran Fitzgerald and junior Uros Petronijevic 6-2. LSU later clinched the doubles point after edging out sophomore Geoffrey Fosso and junior Romain Kalaydjian 6-4.
The Tigers extended their lead 2-0 after Boris Arias got the victory over Fosso in straight sets. After a win from Louisiana State at the No. 5 spot, the Tigers began to get comfortable.
Junior Jordan Angus, who is in his first year with the Torero program, kicked off his first season strong with a win to take the momentum back. Angus took down Tigers' Justin Butsch 6-1, 6-4. Down 3-1, Kalaydjian picked up a huge win over No. 67th-ranked Tam Trinh 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).
While both ranked Toreros were battling it out in third sets, it would be LSU's Jordan Daigle who clinched the win over Uros Petronijevic 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Toreros return to action in the Kick-Off's consolation round against No. 10 Texas A&M or No. 37 TCU tomorrow, January 24th at 10:00 a.m. - PT.
