GAME #8: The University of San Diego football team (5-2, 3-1 PFL), under the direction of third-year head coach Dale Lindsey, will resume Pioneer Football League play this Saturday, as they head east to take on Stetson University in a 10 a.m. (PT) game at Spec Martin Stadium.
SCOUTING THE HATTERS: Stetson enters the game with an overall record of 2-5, and they are 1-4 in the PFL after picking up a 37-14 win on the road against Valparaiso this past Saturday. The Hatters offense is paced by quarterback Ryan Tentler, who leads the team in both rushing, with 161 total yards gained, and also through the air with 1,020 yards, while completing 96 of 181 attempts, and he has thrown seven interceptions. Ja'Vonta Swintonleads the receiving corps with 336 total yards on 22 receptions, and defensively, Donald Payne anchors things down with 86 total tackies, one sack, and has two interceptions.

PFL STANDINGS UPDATE : San Diego currently holds a PFL record of 3-1, which is good for a 2-way tie in second place with Morehead State. Dayton continues to lead the league at 4-0, while Drake is fourth at 3-2, then comes Butler and Marist tied for fifth at 2-2. Campbell sits in seventh at 2-3, while Stetson and Valparaiso are tied for eighth at 1-4, and Davidson is in ninth place at 0-4. Jacksonville is at 3-2, but are ineligible for the PFL regular-season title and automatic bid in 2015 due to league-imposed penalties.
PICKED TO WIN IT: For the fourth straight year, the Toreros were picked to finish first in the PFL Preseason Coaches Poll. USD received seven of a possible 10 first-place votes and 89 of a maximum 100 points. The Toreros were followed by Dayton (87 points), Drake (86), Campbell (71), Butler (59), Stetson (54), Marist (50), Morehead State (40), Valparaiso (37) and Davidson (22). Jacksonville not included in preseason poll due to league penalty. The PFL will feature 11 teams each playing an eight-game schedule to determine the league champion and recipient of the automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA FCS Championship.
TORERO TIDBITS...
* USD Football is in its 53rd season of play, and 23rd season as a member of the Pioneer Football League... San Diego is tied for second with Drake for most PFL titles with six (Dayton leads with 11)... The Toreros have won three of the past four PFL championships (2014, 2012, 2011).
* Since head coach Dale Lindsey has taken over the program, San Diego has amassed an impressive 12-2 record, while playing in the month of October. USD will look to improve upon that this Saturday with a Halloween showdown at Stetson.
* USD has now won a league-best 21 straight home PFL contests after shutting out Drake, 27-0 back on Oct. 17... USD's last home PFL home loss at Torero Stadium came during the 2010 campaign, a 21-20 loss to Dayton on October 9th.
* Junior cornerback Jamal Agnew (San Diego, Calif. / Point Loma HS) led all FCS players in 2014 in passes defended (2.1 average)... He knocked down 19 pass attempts and collected four interceptions... Angew now owns the career record for pass break-ups with 40, having nine this season, and 10 interceptions (school record is 15 by Al-Rilwan Adeyemi and Kyle Slusser).
* Among PFL teams, USD stands out in quite a few areas - #1- Sacks Against (0.71 5 sacks in 7 games), #1- Opponent 1st Downs (13.7), #1- 3rd Down Conversions (44.6%, 50-112), #1- Time of Possession (244:40), #1- 4th Down Conversions (85.7%, 6-7), #1- Rush Defense (82.7), #1- Scoring Defense (16.9 ppg), #2- Kickoff Coverage (39.7 net average).
* Among PFL individuals, USD has seven players that rank in the top-3... DL Jonathan Pedersen (#1Tackles for a Loss, 1.57); QB Anthony Lawrence (#1 in pass efficiency, 150.1 rating per game); and CB Devyn Bryant (Tied for #2 in interceptions, 0.71 per game)CB Jamal Agnew (#2 in passes defended, 1.71).
* Twenty-nine student-athletes were named to the 2015 Preseason All-PFL Team as selected by the league's head coaches. Returning players who were selected to the league's 2014 All-PFL Teams were placed automatically on the 2015 Preseason All-PFL team in order of voting. Sixteen First-Team All-PFL honorees return for the 2015 season. In addition, 12 Second-Team All-PFL selections and one honorable mention recipient from the 2014 All-PFL squads were elevated to the 2015 preseason squad. Four Toreros are included on the PFL Teams - junior running back Jonah Hodges (Santa Cruz, Calif.), senior offensive tackle Pono Keni (Kailua, Hawaii), sophomore tight end Ross Dwelley (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and junior cornerback Jamal Agnew (San Diego, Calif.) on defense.
* The 2015 Toreros return 13 starters (7 or more starts) from last year's 9-3 squad that won the PFL Championship and advanced to the FCS Playoffs for the first time in program history... Four of USD's six returning offensive starters come from the line (LT Pono Keni, LG Luke Meyer, C Steven Oliver, RG Jeff Starr); they are joined by RB Jonah Hodges and TE Ross Dwelley. Defensively the Toreros return six players with four starters from the defensive line (NT Jamal Newman, DT Brandon Pulealii, DE Jonathan Petersen and DL Josh Williams); they are joined by CB Jamal Agnew and LB Nic Henson. Junior punter Ryan Belden returns from special teams.
* Over the past 10 seasons (2005-2014) the Toreros have combined for an overall record of 83-30 (73.5 winning percentage), and PFL mark of 52-14 (78.8 winning percentage)... USD's overall home record on Walter J. Zable Field at Torero Stadium since the start of the 2005 campaign is 51-10 (83.6 winning percentage)... Including the last five home wins of the 2004 campaign, the Toreros strung together a school record 28 straight home victories (2004-2008).
* Key losses from last year's 9-3 club include a trio of senior receivers that accounted for 111 receptions for 1,722 yards and 17 touchdowns - Brandon White (57-828, 9 TDs), Reggie Bell (40-779, 7 TDs) and D'Angelo Barksdale (14-115, 1 TD)... QB Keith Williams, who transferred out after one season, started 11 contests and completed 153-284 for 2,127 yards and 21 touchdowns. Defensively five of USD's top six tacklers are gone - LB Una Hamala (101 stops), LB Troy McClelland (85 tackles), SAF Matt Miller (84 stops), FS Joe LaBarbera (72 tackles) and CB Toney Sawyer (56 stops). Junior LB Nic Henson is the team's top returner with 90 stops a year ago. Kicker David Last graduated after going a perfect 12-12 in field goals last season and 33-35 in PAT kicks. He led the team with 69 points.
* Thirty-three Toreros were selected to the Pioneer Football Honor Roll in 2014, while four Toreros made it onto the 22nd annual Academic All-PFL Squad - LB/SAF Troy McClelland, LB Una Hamala, CB Devyn Bryant and P Ryan Belden.
