GAME #4: The USD Toreros (0-3) head to Anchorage, Alaska for the 2015 GCI Great Alaska Shootout. San Diego will take on Loyola Chicago (3-1) this coming Wednesday, November 25th (11:00 p.m. pacific) at the Alaska Airlines Arena on the campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage. The Toreros will then be off on Thanksgiving, and either play Toledo (2-1) or San Jose State (1-2) on Friday. Saturday's opponent will be one of four teams - Drexel, Middle Tennessee State, UNC Asheville or host Alaska Anchorage. USD appeared in the Great Alaska Shootout in 2009-10, placing 2nd after beating #25 Oklahoma (76-64) and Houston (72-65) before falling to Washington State (93-56).
SERIES RECORD: This is the third meeting between USD and Loyola Chicago with the series tied 1-all... The Toreros won the first meeting, 68-62 (1980-81 campaign) in San Diego at the USD Sports Center Gym... The Ramblers dealt the Toreros a 74-70 loss on Nov. 25, 2013 in the first game of the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Florida.
RADIO/TV/LIVE STATS: All USD home and away games will be broadcast live on ESPN 1700AM with Jack Cronin (2nd season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game shows air 10 minutes prior to tip-off. COACH SMITH (1ST YEAR): Coach Lamont Smith (San Diego, 1998) is in his first head coaching position and comes from New Mexico where he was the Associate Head Coach... Prior to that he spent time at Washington, Arizona State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's College and Saint Louis University... Smith returns to USD where he was a member of the men's basketball team from 1994-99... He started all 27 games his senior year in 1998-99 for the 18-9 Toreros... He was named the Toreros' Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and served as the team captain from 1997-99... Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of San Diego in 1998... Lamont and his wife Kimberly have two daughters -- Payton and Olivia.
TOREROS SEARCHING FOR FIRST ROAD WIN: The Toreros dropped their season-opener at USC on Nov. 13th, 83-45... USD struggled from the field in all shooting phases - overall (15-61, 24.6%), three-point (6-31, 19.4%) and free throw (9-26, 34.6%)... Senior wing Duda Sanadze was the lone Torero to reach double-digit scoring with 12 points... The Toreros played much better but still came up short in a 74-62 decision at Western Michigan on Nov. 17th... Marcus Harris, in first collegiate start, scored 13 points... He was followed by Brett Bailey (12 points), Brandon Perry (12 points) and Sanadze (10 points)... WMU attempted 38 FT's (25 made) to USD's 10 (5 makes)... This past Saturday USD dropped a 67-55 decision at CS Fullerton... Harris scored a personal-best 14 points and Jito Kok chipped in with a season-high 12 points and 3 blocked shots (200 for his career)... Freshman Christian Oshita grabbed a game-high 9 boards off the bench to go with 4 points.
SCOUTING THE LOYOLA CHICAGO RAMBLERS: The Loyola Chicago Ramblers head to the GCI Great Alaska Shootout with a 3-1 mark... They opened the season with a 76-64 home win over Texas-Antonio (Nov. 13), and followed up with an 84-51 home victory over Eureka the next evening... After dropping a 75-51 loss at New Mexico (Nov. 18), they notched their third win of the season on the 21st over Toledo (69-62)... Four starters are averaging in double-digit scoring: junior guard Milton Doyle (16.8 ppg), senior guard Earl Petersen (11.8 ppg), senior guard Devon Turk (11.0 ppg) and senior forward Montel James (10.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg)... The Ramblers average 70.0 points per game while limiting their opponents to 63.0 points per contest... Head Coach Porter Moser is in his fifth season.
TORERO STANDOUT ANDRE LAWS FROM ANCHORAGE: Andre Laws, currently 8th all-time on USD's scoring list with 1,337 points, is a native of Anchorage... Laws played for the Toreros between 1998-2002... He played professionally for S. Jose/Unimed (Brazil) from 2006-2015.
