SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 30 University of San Diego men's tennis team (12-4, 2-0 WCC) remain undefeated at home after a stellar performance at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic. The Toreros were crowned champions of the tournament after a 4-2 victory over the defending champions, No. 33 Drake Bulldogs, Saturday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros dependable doubles play clearly carried into singles as the squad took home the trophy for the second time in the last five years.

Having clinched nine of their ten doubles points at home, senior Ciaran Fitzgerald and sophomore Geoffrey Fosso got the Toreros off to a great start. The pair defeated Bulldogs' Matt Frost and Ravi Patel 6-1 on court three. With the set neck and neck at the No. 2 spot, No. 41 junior Jordan Angus and sophomore Filip Vittek secured the point, cruising past Drake's Ben Lott and Bayo Philips 6-3.

While the Bulldogs answered at the No. 6 spot, Petronijevic picked up the lead once again after a straight-set victory over Drake's 42nd-ranked Alen Salibasic 6-1, 6-4. Angus extended the Torero lead to three, knocking off Bulldogs' Matt Frost 6-3, 6-4. Today's victory was Angus' fifth-straight win in singles. The Englishman has won nine of his last ten dual matches.

After junior Romain Kalaydjian fell in a tight, two-set decision, both Fosso and Vittek battled in tight sets. In the end, it would be Vittek to clinch the victory for the Toreros. The sophomore defeated Drake's No. 38 Ben Lott 7-5, 6-4 - his second highest ranked defeat this season.

"It's a team goal to go undefeated throughout the year, and to be undefeated at home thus far has been huge," head coach Brett Masi noted afer the victory. "To play all three matches at home this week was a big advantage. We play our best tennis on our home courts, but playing back-to-back matches everyday against top-45 teams is not easy. In the end, it feels great to take first place in a tournament, especially hosting. We won in 2011 at the inaugural tournament, and since then we haven't been able to do so until today. It's a great tournament and we were able to turn it around even after struggling in our last couple of matches on the road. We played great tennis the past few days and I am really proud of the guys for staying focused and playing their best tennis."

Today's championship was especially sweet due to the fact the Toreros defeated three, top-45 squads in three days (No. 43 Denver, No. 32 Princeton, and No. 33 Drake). The Toreros rest up for a week before returning for a couple of conference matches at home against the San Francisco Dons and Santa Clara Broncos.
