March 29, 2015 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's rowing team finished the final day of the 42nd Crew Classic with a strong showing.
In the first race of the day for USD, the JV 8 boat of Will Graf, Ryan Sandy, Jack Pokalsky, Brandon de Caussin, Mike Mohrman, Parker Danz, Spencer Currey, Sam Stephens, Pierce Salamack finished in first place in the Petite Final with a time of 6:24.23, which was a whole two seconds faster than the boat from UC Santa Barbara, and well ahead of the rest of the field.
San Diego's third Varsity 8 boat of Berkley Brown, Luke Uetrecht, Sam Schelonka, Parker Brooks, Daniel Hearst, Konrad Altvater, Hayden Town, Andrew Thomas, Nick Bea, that was competing in the grand final, also had a great showing, as they finished in second place with a time of 6:28.60, just under two seconds off the pace of the first place boat from Stanford. USD was six seconds faster than cross-town rival UC San Diego, who finished in third place.
In the Varsity 8 Cal Cup Grand Final the Varsity 8 of Torrey Ray, Rory Kew, Henri Hicks, Nick Watson, Will Bastien, Taylor Terheggen, Alex La Bruno, John Bacic, Patrick McPolin, led for the majority of the race but couldn't hold off a last second surge by UC Santa Barbara and fell to the Gauchos by 0.6 seconds.
USD will return to action on April 11th, as they head up to the Bay Area to compete in the Stanford Invite.
