MALIBU, Calif. -- The No. 17 University of San Diego men's tennis team (15-4, 5-0 WCC) stay hot in league play as they defeated the No. 41 Pepperdine Waves (11-8, 3-2 WCC) Wednesday evening at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Although the Waves stayed close in singles play, the Toreros edged them out 4-1. The Toreros stay on track sustaining their undefeated record against West Coast Conference opponents.
The Toreros remained dominant in doubles play quickly picking up the first point at the No. 2 spot. Juniors Romain Kalaydjian and Uros Petronijevic cruised past Waves' Pedro Imamachkine and Tom Hill 6-2. Pepperdine managed to equalize the score after senior Ciaran Fitzgerald and sophomore Geoffrey Fosso dropped their first league match at the No. 3 spot. No. 43-ranked junior Jordan Angus and sophomore Filip Vittek came up clutch for the Toreros once again securing the point with a 6-3 victory. The pair are 10-3 in dual season play.
Angus, who recently earned WCC Player of the Week honors, lived up to the title. Angus picked up the first singles point of the day, marking his seventh singles victory in a row and defeating Waves' Rakshay Thakkar 6-3, 6-2. While Kalaydjian dropped a two-set decision at the No. 4 spot, Fosso answered -- picking up a victory over Pepperdine's Luca Marquard 6-3, 6-3. No. 57 Vittek clinched the match for the Toreros, narrowly ousting Waves' Stefan Menichella 7-6(3), 7-5.
The remaining matches at the No. 1 and 6 positions stopped play in third sets.
"Every match these guys surprise me," Head coach Brett Masi said. "They want to show everyone that they deserve to be where we are. It can get a little crazy at Pepperdine to play and the guys handeled it well - handled the pressure well. I think all the tough, away matches we have had so far really paid off. This was the best road match I've seen the guys play. This was the first time I've ever won here, also grabbing my 100th win. There's a lot of people to thank for that. I am veyr proud of the guys. Even though we were the better team it's always nice to beat the Waves."
The Toreros stay at home this weekend and celebrate Senior Day. The Toreros will honor lone senior Ciaran Fitzgerald this Saturday, April 4th, at 1:00 p.m. -- PT against the St. Mary's Gaels.
