USD Picks Up Wins at the Stanford Invite

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - In the head-to-head dual race format at the Stanford Invite, the University of San Diego men's rowing team took home victory on Saturday on the Redwood Shores Lagoon in the Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8 against Orange Coast College, and the Toreros had a good showing against No. 17 Oregon State University.

In the afternoon races, the Toreros Varsity 8 outpaced their Southern California rival Orange Coast College by 16.6 seconds. The V8 boat of Torrey Ray, Rory Kew, Henri Hicks, Nick Watson, Will Bastien, Taylor Terheggen, Alex La Bruno, John Bacic, Patrick McPolin posted a time of 6:18.8, while the Prates V8 boat came in at 6:30.7.

The Toreros 3V8 boat of Kai Morse, Luke Uetrecht, Sam Schelonka, Parker Brooks, Daniel Hearst, Konrad Altvater, Spencer Currey, Andrew Thomas, Nick Bea also chimed in with a win in the afternoon race against OCC. This Torero boat posted a time of 6:45.7, which was a full 27.7 seconds faster then the Pirates boat. USD came off the line fast, cracked open water early and continued to extend its lead through the finish.

The 2V8 boat of Will Graf, Ryan Sandy, Hayden Town, Sam Stephens, Mike Mohrman, Parker Danz, Jack Pokalsky, Brandon de Caussin, Pierce Salamack was narrowly defeated by the Pirates, as OCC posted a time of 6:27.9, while USD was just under a second off the pace of the Pirates boat at 6:28.3.

In the morning session, USD was matched up against No. 17 Oregon State, and the Toreros didn't have a bad showing. All three boats fell short of pulling off the upset, with the V8 boat posting a time of 6:05.6, which was 7.2 seconds behind the Beavers boat. The 2V8 boasted a time of 6:14.3, 10.0 seconds behind the OSU boat and the 3V8, which had Berkley Brown as its coxswain, had a time of 6:14.3, which was nine seconds off the pace of the Beavers.

San Diego will return to the water on Sunday, as they have three more races at the Stanford Invite. Sunday morning's racing will kick off with the USD V8 and 2V8 taking on Santa Clara University, and the 3V8 taking on the Cal Lightweights. The varsity eight boats will race at 9:30 a.m., while the 2V8 will go at 10:10 a.m. The 3V8 boat will take on the Cal Lightweights at 10:50 a.m. to conclude the USD racing in this prestigious event.
