West Coast Conference Tournament Bracket
PROVO, Ut. -- The University of San Diego men's tennis team (20-4, 9-0 WCC) ended their regular season going undefeated against conference opponents for the second season in a row Saturday afternoon at the Outdoor Tennis Courts in Provo, Ut. The Toreros defeated the Brigham Young Cougars (9-17, 3-6 WCC) 4-0. The squad continued to achieve great marks as they reached the highest winning percentage in program history (.833), while also being the first Toreros to stay undefeated against league play for back-to-back seasons.
The Toreros sustained their edge comfortably as doubles began. Junior Romain Kalaydjian and sophomore Alexandros Araouzos picked up the first set of the afternoon defeating Cougars' Aidan Carrazedo and David Ball 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. The Toreros followed that up with a solid victory at the No. 2 spot as senior Ciaran Fitzgerald and junior Uros Petronijevic clinched -- grabbing a 6-3 win over BYU's Francis Sargeant and Juan Canales.
In singles play, the Toreros would compete in similar fashion. While the sets stayed tight at the top of the line-up, No. 4 Kalaydjian continued the momentum. Kalaydjian knocked off Cougars' Jeremy Bourgeois 6-2, 6-4, grabbing his fifth singles victory in a row. Fitzgerald followed, taking down BYU's Juan Canales in a straight-set decision at the No. 5 spot. Fitzgerald stayed undefeated in conference play as well in singles, while he also rides a six-match winning streak.
Only needing one more point to clinch the victory, it was junior Jordan Angus who took care of business. Angus, who went 8-0 against league opponents this season, defeated Cougars' Jacob Sullivan 6-2, 7-6(3).
"It's awesome," head coach Brett Masi expressed after the win. "I'm really happy for the guys. To see where we were in January, a little banged up, and to take the course we have since, 9-0 in conference, is a huge accomplishment. The guys have kept their heads up and handled tough conditions well. It's not easy coming from San Diego and playing on BYU's courts. I couldn't be happier for the guys. They have put in a lot of work and deserve all the success we have had thus far."
The No. 1-seeded Toreros take a quick break before prepping for the West Coast Conference Championships held in San Diego, Calif. at the Barnes Tennis Center (April 22-25, 2015).
"We handle the conference tournament as just a different phase of the season," Masi said in regards to being the No. 1-seeded squad. "We still have a lot to prove. We want to put ourselves in the position to have the best possible chance at the NCAA tournament. Plus, everybody will be gunning for us. So, when you have that target on your back every team is going to come out and give us their best. Overall, I think the guys are anxious to repeat last year. If we continue to play like we have all season I'm confident we can get another championship."
The Toreros are set to play this Thursday, April 23rd at 12:00 p.m. -- PT. To view the entire WCC tournament draw click here.
