May 11, 2015 NEWPORT, Calif. - At the 50th Newport Regatta in Newport Beach, the University of San Diego men's rowing team fought hard and had a solid showing, although not exactly the desired result in all boats.
The highlight of the day came in the Frosh/Novice 4 of Sam Schelonka, Parker Brooks, Nick Bea, Andrew Thomas, and coxed by Will Graf, dominated wire to wire and finished open water up on the entire field.
In the 2V4 of Konrad Altvater, Mike Mohrman, Ryan Sandy, Daniel Hearst and coxed by Berkley Brown, were in a heated battle with UCLA, trading the lead multiple times as they both pulled away from the other boats. A burst of speed at the end by the Bruins put their bow in front for good and the Toreros came in second.
Despite leading until 1000M mark, the 2V8 boat of Kai Morse, Luke Uetrecht, Jack Pokalsky, Brandon de Caussin, Hayden Town, Parker Danz, Spencer Currey, Sam Stephens, and Pierce Salamack, couldn't answer to the moves by OCC and UCSB and finished in the third spot.
In the tightest race of the day, the Varsity 8 of Torrey Ray, Rory Kew, Henri Hicks, Nick Watson, Will Bastien, Taylor Terheggen, Alex La Bruno, John Bacic, and Patrick McPolin, also finished in third place, mere seats behind the race winner.
"As a tune-up before the last race of the season at the PCRC regatta (which will determine if the Toreros then head to the IRA National Championships in Mercer, New Jersey) ; we couldn't ask for a better opportunity to add focus, determination, and aggression into this final week of training than to have come up short on our goals at the Newport Regatta," said head coach Brooks Dagman. "We are looking forward to getting onto the course at Lake Natoma on Saturday."
USD will look to once again qualify for nationals this weekend, as they head up to Rancho Cordova to compete in the PCRC's.
