Feb. 29, 2016 The West Coast Conference announced today that San Diego 6'5" senior guard Duda Sanadze (Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia) has been tabbed the WCC Player of the Week. In USD's two games this past week against Gonzaga and Portland, Sanadze averaged 24.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 46.9% from the field (15-32), 61.5% from three-point (8-13) and 84.6% from the free throw line (11-13).
On Saturday, Sanadze powered the Toreros past Portland (85-76) with a new USD Division I scoring record of 38 points. His output was one more point than the previous Torero mark of 37 set by both Marty Munn (1988 vs. LMU) and Mike Whitmarsh (1983 vs. LMU). For the game Sanadze converted 11-20 shots overall, 6-10 three-pointers and 10-12 from the free throw line. He made his first six shots of the game and would go on to score 22 of his 38 in the second half. After leading by as many as 16 in the second half, Portland rallied to get within three, but Sanadze answered with another three-pointer and was fouled on the play and converted the free throw to put USD back in control. The 38 points broke his previous career high of 29 points set earlier this season in USD's road win at Portland. In Thursday's home loss to Gonzaga Sanadze chipped in with 11 points.
Sanadze, a three-year performer for the Toreros, enters this week's WCC Tournament as the team's leading scorer at 12.6 points per game. The Toreros will face Loyola Marymount on Friday, March 4th, in the 6:00 p.m. game (BYUtv) at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The winner will go on to face No. 1 seed Saint Mary's College on Saturday, March 5th, in the 7:00 p.m. contest (ESPN2).
