NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The USD softball team (9-12) kicked off the Matador Classic with a 5-2 win over Toledo Friday morning at CSUN. The Toreros scored three runs in the first two innings and then held on to win their second game in a row.
The Toreros' offense wasted no time Friday morning. Their first three batters reached base via a couple walks and a single to load the bases, and their first run came in due to an illegal pitch by the Rockets' pitcher. Lauren Kane then singled up the middle to give USD a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
The Toreros added another run in the second when Tatum Schultz knocked in Danielle Mavridis with a single to right field.
The Rockets threatened in the second inning with runners on second and third with one out, but Megan Sabbatini escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
In the top of the sixth, Kane led off the inning with a single through the left side. The next batter, Olivia Sandusky laced a double to the gap to bring home Kane. Sandusky would eventually score on a wild pitch, giving USD a 5-0 lead.
Toledo, down their final out, rallied in the bottom of the seventh. After Sabbatini retired the first two batters of the inning, she gave up a walk and then a single. Chandler Rice then hit a two-RBI double to left-centerfield to bring the score to 5-2 USD. Coach McElvain then lifted Sabbatini for Grace Hernandez, who needed just two pitches to end the game and pick up the save.
Sabbatini (4-6) earned her fourth win of the season, tossing 6.2 innings and giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out seven.
The Toreros return to action Friday afternoon against Grand Canyon. First pitch will be at approximately 1:10 p.m.
