San Diego Drops Series Finale at Santa Clara 5-3

Toreros score three in the first but could not hold on as Broncos complete sweep at the Santa Clara Softball Stadium

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Diego softball (16-23, 3-6 WCC) scored three runs in the first inning but couldn't add to the lead, falling to Santa Clara (22-19, 7-2 WCC) by a 5-3 margin on Sunday afternoon at the Santa Clara Softball Stadium to drop the series finale and end the weekend.

Abrielle Diaz got San Diego on the board early with a two-run double to right field in the first, scoring Taylor Johnson and Kaylee Oh. Michelle Delgado followed with a single, and Diaz capped the rally by stealing home on a double steal to make it 3-0. From there, Santa Clara chipped away — scoring in the third, fourth, and sixth innings — while USD went scoreless over the final six frames.

Taylor Johnson doubled in the sixth to put runners on the corners, but the Toreros couldn't push across a run. Kelsey Tadlock started and was followed by Kaitlyn Bartlow and Charlie Johnson in relief for San Diego.

The Toreros will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Cal State Fullerton for a non-conference midweek game at home. First pitch at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex against the Titans is set for 5 p.m.
