June 27, 2016 SAN DIEGO -- Head coach Lamont Smith announced the addition of NCAA Division I transfers Isaiah Wright and Isaiah Pineiro.
Isaiah Wright, a 6-2 guard from Boise, Idaho, played in 29 games for Utah this past season. The one-time Idaho Gatorade player of the year was a reserve in the backcourt for the Utes. As a freshman for the Sweet Sixteen bound Runnin' Utes, Wright played in 33 games. He attended Borah High School in Boise, Idaho. He was named the 2014 Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 16.2 points, 6.9 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 steals. His accolades also include being named the 5A All-Idaho Player of the Year and MVP of the 5A Idaho State Tournament while leading his squad to a state title.
"We are very excited to have Isaiah Wright in our program as he understands what it takes to win and has won at a high level in high school (state champions) and at Utah where he was part of a Sweet 16 team," stated head coach Lamont Smith. "He is a tremendous worker and should bring some great experience to our team. He's also a high character young man that will be an excellent addition to our university and community."
Isaiah Pineiro, a 6-6 wing from Auburn, California, played in all 31 games this past season for Portland State while totaling 19 starts. He finished with averages of 12.0 points per game and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 50.7 percent from the field (137-270) and 76.3 percent from the free throw line (90-118). He notched three double-doubles against UT Rio Grande Valley (24 points/14 rebounds), Nevada (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Northern Arizona (31 points, 12 rebounds), and tallied 17 games in double-digit scoring. He played his freshman year at Sierra Junior College where he averaged 15.4 points and 7.4 rebounds. Pineiro attended Placer High School in Auburn, California. As a senior he averaged 20.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting .532 from the field and .743 at the line. He earned All-League and All-Section honors and was a two-time team MVP. He also played football where he was All-League, All-State and the team's defensive MVP.
"Isaiah Pineiro is a hard blue collar guy who loves to compete and work," said head coach Lamont Smith. "Pineiro is a very mature young man who has the ability to be a tremendous leader for our basketball team. We welcome his experience to our young ball club. He's also a high character young man that will be an excellent addition to our university and community."
The above players join an incoming group of freshmen to the program for 2016-17 that includes 6-0 guard Nassir Barrino (Newark, NJ), 6-2 guard Mark Carbone (Wethersfield, CT), 6-8 forward Juwan Gray (Dover, DE), 6-10 forward José Martinez (Cayey, Puerto Rico) and 6-10 forward Frank Ryder (Boulder, CO).
