SAN DIEGO, Calif. - USD men's tennis hosted their season opener dual against Utah State University (USU) Sunday afternoon. The Toreros dominated the courts with a 6-1 victory over the Aggies.
"I was really proud of the way our boys competed in our first dual of the season," said Head Coach Ryan Keckley. "In a lot of ways, it was exactly what we expected. We came out nervous in singles and doubles and had to work through the anxiety together."
The Toreros won the point for the double round after the pair of Filip Vittek-Joshua Page won against USU's Swindells and Maier (6-4) and the Alexandros Araouzos-Gui Osorio duo defeated USU's Barajas and Nakajima (6-4). Guus Koevermans and Joel Gamerov ended their match unfinished against Serrano and Wehnelt with a score of 4-5.
USD won five of the six singles matches later in the day. Filip Vittek defeated USU's Wehnelt (6-0, 6-3), Joshua Page beat USU's Barajas (3-6, 6-0, 6-4), followed by Joel Gamerov who won his match against Maier (6-4, 7-6 (5)).
"I was extremely impressed with the leaders on this team. The intangibles were there from start to finish on every court which speaks volumes to Josh, Alex and Filip. They led the way and really set the bar high for this freshmen class. That is what won us this match today," said Keckley.
Freshman Gui Osorio defeated USU's Bucar (5-7, 6-2, 6-4) and Alex Araouzos beat USU's Serrano (6-4, 7-5). The only loss of the day was a long battle by Guus Koevermans who lost to USU's Swindells 7-6 (3), 4-6, 10-5.
"We didn't push the panic button when things got tough, but relied on what we have been preaching since September," said Keckley. "It was a hard fought match by both squads and fortunately, we played the big points well today as a team."
The Toreros will play their next dual match against Virginia Tech for the ITA Kick Off Weekend in Los Angeles January 28 at 10 a.m. The men will be going in to that match 1-0 for the 2017 season.
