Final Stats

HONOLULU, HI - The USD women's tennis team (1-2) lost a nail-biter 4-3 at the University of Hawaii (2-2) Saturday afternoon. The match came down to the No. 5 spot in singles, where Hawaii's Michelle Pitts outlasted Maria-Paula Torres in three sets.

The Toreros got off to a good start, winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the first point. After the duo of Torres and Nicole Anderson were blanked 6-0 by Cindy Nguyen and Klara Pribylova, the Toreros rallied to win at the No. 1 and 3 position.

At No. 1, Kati Kukaras and Sophia Chow knocked off Marina Hruba and Michelle Pits 6-2 and then Colomba DiFilippo and Daniela Morales (No. 3) outlasted Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma 7-5 to claim the doubles point.

The Toreros went up 2-0 after DiFilippo, USD's lone upperclassman, earned a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Pribylova, but Hawaii would tie the match at 2-2 after getting wins at the No. 1 and 3 spot.

Cindy Nguyen won a couple of tightly-contested sets against Nicole Anderson 6-4, 7-5 and then Marina Hruba beat Daniela Morales in three sets, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4.

Kati Kukaras gave USD the lead after beating Roxanne Resma in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 4 spot, but Hawaii would rally to win the final two points to clinch the victory.

Petra Melounova edged Gemma Garcia 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot, before Pits sealed the match in three sets against Torres, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

In a pair of exhibition singles matches, USD's Sophia Chow defeated Alzbeta Houbova 6-4, 6-3 and Sabrina Barkdull fell to Saga Shermin 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.

The Toreros will play one more match while in Hawaii when they take on CSUN Sunday at 2:00 p.m. PT.
