SPOKANE, Wash. - Thursday marked the second conference win for the Toreros this season.
The Toreros broke the Bulldog's previously undefeated conference record and defeated them in a 4-1 decision. USD improved to a 6-9 (2-0 WCC) while Gonzaga fell to 11-2 (2-1 WCC).
The Toreros started the match ready to battle, and took the first two points in doubles play.
Maria-Paula Torres and
Sophia Chow, who played as the No. 3 team, defeated Kate Ketels and Haruna Tsuruta 6-2. They were quickly followed by
Colomba DiFilippo and
Daniela Morales, who defeated Alex
Bourguignon and Domonique Garley 6-4 at the No. 1 position.
Once the doubles point was clinched, the match on court two was suspended and the teams picked up singles play. On court one, Gonzaga's Sophie Whittle earned the only point for the Bulldogs against
Nicole Anderson.
Daniela Morales continued the momentum gained in doubles play, and defeated Graciela Rosas 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
Gemma Garcia, on court three, beat
Alex Bourguignon in a swift 6-1, 6-3 decision. And the final point that clinched the win for USD was from
Colomba DiFilippo. She defeated Haruna Tsuruta 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 position.
The Toreros play their third conference match of the season against Portland on Sunday at 11 a.m.
