Toreros Edged by Washington in Final Minutes

Four San Diego players scored in double-digits

SEATTLE – A last-second 3-point attempt by Tyler Williams did not fall and San Diego's upset bid at Washington came up just short as the Toreros fell Monday night, 66-63.

USD (2-1) gave the Huskies (2-1) all they could handle and held a one-point lead with less than four minutes to play.

Washington outscored the Toreros 7-3 over the final 3:08 to escape with the win. Williams got a decent look at a 3-pointer from the right sideline on the final play of the game but the semi-contested effort hit the front of the rim and bounced out.

The result spoiled an otherwise impressive night by the Toreros, which shot 47.2 percent and held the Huskies to 41 percent from the field and 26 percent from 3-point range. USD led for a longer amount of time throughout the contest at 18:35 to Washington's 17:46.

USD hurt its own cause with 18 turnovers which led to 19 points for Washington. The Huskies produced 10 steals as a team.

Olin Carter III celebrated his 22nd birthday with a team-high 17 points. Isaiah Pineiro (14), Yauhen Massalski (12) and Alex Floresca (10) each hit double-digits in points. Williams had a career-high nine assists and Massalski recorded the first double-double of his career with 11 rebounds to go along with 12 points.

Floresca was excellent off the bench and helped provide a physical presence inside for the Toreros which scored 28 of their points in the paint.

Pineiro led USD in scoring in each of the first two games and played well against the Huskies but was limited to 29 minutes due to early foul trouble in the first half.

The Toreros got off to a hot start, converting on seven of their first nine shots from the field to jump out to a 16-9 lead. USD cooled off, however, and weathered a scoring drought that lasted 5:13 in which it shot 1-for-8. Washington went on a 12-2 run from 9:42 to 3:56 and took an eight-point lead, 29-21.

USD regained its rhythm and finished the final 2:50 of the half on an 11-2 run – capped by a bank-shot 3-pointer by Massalski as time expired – to take a 32-31 lead into the break.

The Toreros picked up where they left off in the second half and opened on a 13-5 run to take their largest lead of the game, 45-36.

However, USD again cooled off and had to persevere through another extended Washington run in which they outscored the Toreros 19-2 over a span of 5:32. The run was capped by a 3-pointer by Washington's Hameir Wright with 10:16 to play to give the Huskies a 55-47 lead.

The Toreros chipped away at the deficit. A put-back jumper by Massalski followed by a 3-pointer by Williams at 8:42 pulled the Toreros to back within three, 55-52.

With 3:08 to play, the game was tied at 60-60 after a free throw by Hameir Wright. The Huskies extended their lead to four with 1:16 to play but a jumper by Pineiro cut the Toreros deficit in half and a free throw by Massalski made it a one-point game with 29 seconds to play.

After the Huskies Jaylen Nowell converted a pair of free throws the Toreros played for the final shot. Williams got a decent look on a somewhat broken play but could not get it to fall.

The Toreros will look to get back on track Thursday when it plays host to San Diego Christian at 7 p.m. PT.
