First Half Goals Down Toreros

Pepperdine scores two goals in 25 minutes to beat Toreros, 2-0, in final conference game

Nov. 3, 2018

MALIBU, Calif. - San Diego could not break through the stellar Pepperdine defense and fell to the Waves in its final conference match of the season, 2-0, in Malibu on Saturday afternoon.

Summer Mason led the match with five shots, but the Waves (11-6-2, 6-1-2) defense made sure none of them hit the back of the net. Pepperdine's back line is one of the best in the WCC, with only four goals being scored against the Waves since the start of conference.

The Waves are only the third team this season to shutout USD's (8-9-1, 4-5) quick and accurate offense, recording a .140 shot percentage. With the loss, the Toreros will finish fifth in the WCC.

Pepperdine scored both of its goals in the first 25 minutes. Pepperdine's Brie Welch sent a cross to Joelle Anderson for a tap in goal, past goalkeeper Amber Michel in the sixth minute.

The Waves scored again off a mistouch by USD and shot to the far post out of reach for Michel.

Mason led the match with five shots and one on goal. She will finish the year with her name in the school record book. The senior forward recorded 80 shots this year, tying the most in a single season at USD, which was set in 1999 by Sufia Wali.

Milan Moses also recorded two shots with both of them on target. Moses will finish the season with her name in the school record book as well. This year, she tied the school record for most game-winning goals in a season (5) and ranks second for most goals in a season (13) and sixth for most points in a season (29).

The Toreros picked up the pace in the second half generating more scoring opportunities, but could not score. In the final 45 minutes, USD held advantages in shots (4-2) and corners (4-0).

The Toreros back line prevented the Waves from extending their lead at all in the second half. Michel recorded three saves, facing nine shots.
