SAN DIEGO - San Diego was edged by UC San Diego at the City Championships on Mission Bay over three timed races.
The two local teams, and guest Orange Coast College, competed in the annual City Championships on Saturday morning. An ill stricken San Diego crew took to the water in a last-minute lineup up change to race both UCSD and OCC.
"Considering that some of our top guys were out sick and this was a new line up for the varsity, I think it went pretty well," said head coach Brooks Dagman. "These guys committed despite the lineup set-back and gave a great effort."
The City Championship title is determined by the winner of at least two of three timed race pieces.
The three teams lined up both their 1V and 2V eights, six boats across, for a six, four and three-minute race.
The Toreros fell short to both OCC and UCSD in the varsity eight on both the six and four minute contests. The second varsity fell to UCSD but defeated OCC's second eight for all three racing pieces.
The varsity eight was able to pull ahead of the Tritons by about a seat and a half for the third race.
Although OCC won all three races they are considered a guest therefore UCSD takes the title of City Champion for 2018.
Up next the Toreros compete in a two-day scrimmage against UCSD, Gonzaga, Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount on March 11 and 12.
