SAN DIEGO -- Nico Borter and Gui Osorio provided the finishing touches in doubles and singles play to lead San Diego to a, 4-0, victory against Utah State on Thursday morning.

With doubles knotted at one match apiece, Borter and Osorio trailed 4-5 against the Aggies' (9-7) Jamie Barajas and Jose Carvajal. Borter and Osorio won the next two games to take a 6-5 lead and nearly finished off the comeback but instead went into a tiebreaker tied at 6-6.

The duo trailed 5-3 in the tiebreaker but reeled off the next four consecutive points to win, 7-5, and secure the doubles point for the Toreros (6-4).

"We snuck out the doubles point with some clutch volleying from Nico and Gui at our one spot," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "They came up with two incredible points at 5-5 in the tiebreaker."

Osorio and Borter improved to 9-2 this season when playing in the No. 1 doubles position.

August Holmgren and Joel Gamerov made quick work of Utah State's Andrew Nakajima and Valdemar earlier in the day, 6-1.

"This was one of the most competitive matches we have played this year," said Keckley. "We have been working on our intensity levels for the past two weeks and it showed today. It was a battle from start to finish."

The Toreros took control in singles play earning victories in the No. 1, 3 and 4 spots. Gamerov cruised to a 6-3, 6-2, victory against Valdemar Holm in the fourth position to double USD's lead to, 2-0. He improved to 6-3 in dual match play this season.

Osorio battled to a 6-4, 6-1, win against Sergiu Bucur in the No. 1 spot and improved to 4-2 when playing in the top spot.

Moments later, Borter provided the exclamation point on USD's victory in dramatic fashion in the third position. After taking the first set, 6-2, Borter went back-and-forth with the Aggies' Samuel Serrano. Borter jumped out to a 3-2 lead but dropped the next two games and trailed 4-3.

Borter responded by winning the next two games to retake the lead, 5-4. Serrano tied the set at 5-5 and again at 6-6 to send the set to a tiebreaker. Borter took an early lead in the tiebreaker, weathered a short rally by Serrano and secured the victory with a 7-5 tiebreaker decision.

"Nico delivered for us in singles with an excellent performance late in the match," said Keckley. "He was tested and remained calm and present during some trying moments."

USD advances to the semifinal round of the draw and will take on No. 24 Memphis at 10 a.m.

"I was extremely pleased with our efforts today," said Keckley. "We have a great opportunity tomorrow with a top-25 opponent on our home court."
