SAN DIEGO - Nico Borter earned a dominating victory to claim the clinching point for No. 48 San Diego as the Toreros earned a convincing, 6-1, victory against Denver on Saturday afternoon.
With the Toreros (7-7) leading 3-1, Borter defeated the Pioneers' (7-6) Matt Summers, 6-4, 6-4, to provide the clinching point and snap a three-match losing skid for USD. Borter improved to 2-1 this season when playing in the second spot and has won eight of his past 10 singles matches.
"We competed very well as a team today," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "We didn't play our best tennis but we fought hard as a unit. We have been bringing better energy match by match. This has to be a staple in order for us to be successful moving forward."
The Toreros got off to a strong start in doubles play and earned victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions to claim the doubles point. August Holmgren and Pratt Keerasuntonpong made quick work of their opponent at No. 2 with a 6-2 decision. Alex Araouzos and David Norfeldt won shortly after, 6-3, to give the Toreros an early, 1-0, lead in the match.
Joel Gamerov continued his solid play at No. 3, defeating Jesse Ruder-Hook, 6-3, 6-3, to put USD up, 2-0. It was Gamerov's second consecutive singles victory and he improved to 6-4 when playing in the third position.
Denver earned its only victory of the day at the No. 6 position, which cut USD's lead in half, 2-1.
However, the Toreros responded quickly when Araouzos won his match at No. 5, 6-2, 6-4. His victory in the second set was particularly impressive. Trailing 4-1, Araouzos won the next five consecutive games to win the set and secure the point for USD.
After Borter provided the clinching point in the second position, the teams continued to play out the remaining matches.
The Toreros made the most of the extra play, earning a pair of impressive comeback victories. Norfeldt dropped his first set against Eric Morris at No. 4, 6-3, but rallied to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Holmgren put the finishing touches on an impressive day for the Toreros by winning at No. 1, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5). Holmgren was impressive in the final-set tiebreaker. He fell behind early, 3-0, then again, 4-1. However, he won six of the next seven points to win the tiebreaker, 7-5, and seal the 6-1 victory for the Toreros.
USD will look to keep its momentum going Sunday at 1 p.m. PT when it resumes conference play against Portland.
