March 31, 2018 Final Stats
Provo, Utah -- San Diego (8-8) dropped a 4-2 decision against BYU (10-5) on Saturday afternoon, despite strong singles performances by Daniela Morales and Maria-Paula Torres.
The Cougars gained an early lead in doubles play, winning two of the three matchups. Finishing first, BYU's No. 2 doubles team defeated Sophia Chow and Torres, 6-1. The Toreros bounced back with the next set with Gemma Garcia and Carolin Nonnenmacher winning their set, 6-4. However, the Cougars gained the point when they defeated Nicole Anderson and Morales, 7-5.
Following the doubles round, the Toreros headed into back-and-forth singles competition where they earned their two points of the day.
The Cougars went 2-0 after Malykh won over USD's Kati Kukaras, 6-3, 6-3.
Torres responded with a win against her BYU opponent, 6-2, 6-3.
BYU answered with their third point coming from a defeat over Nicole Anderson, 6-1, 7-5.
Daniela Morales gained the Toreros' final point when she defeated her BYU opponent, 6-4, 6-3.
However, the Cougars secured their win with a victory over Colomba DiFilippo, 6-4, 2-5, 7-5.
Gemma Garcia left her match unfinished, leaving her singles record in tact at six wins in a row.
Although a tough weekend, the Toreros will have a chance to improve against Long Beach State at home on April 6 at 1:30 p.m. PST.
