San Diego earns 67-63 comeback victory against San Francisco

SAN DIEGO – Isaiah Pineiro scored a game-high 22 points to lead San Diego to a 67-63 comeback victory against San Francisco on Saturday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (15-7, 4-3 WCC) trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half and 11 at halftime but outscored the Dons, 46-31, in the second half to secure the victory. USD was excellent down the stretch and hit 10 of its final 12 shots from the field.

USD shot 62 percent in the second half and out-rebounded USF, 22-12. The Toreros limited the Dons (17-4, 5-2 WCC) to 34 percent shooting from the field on the night.

Pineiro added a game-high 13 rebounds to his 22 points for his seventh double-double of the season.

Isaiah Wright played all 40 minutes and produced 17 points, two rebounds and two assists. He was excellent defensively and was key to slowing down a potent Dons offense that entered the game averaging 76.9 points.

Yauhen Massalski also hit double-digits in scoring with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and contributed six rebounds.

Facing an 11-point deficit at halftime, the Toreros chipped away at the difference early in the second half and reeled off a 21-6 run over the first 9:37 of the half to take a 42-40 lead.

A free throw by Joey Calcaterra at 16:01 brought the Toreros to within single digits, 37-28. A dunk by Massalski at 12:30, followed by a hook shot in the lane by Pineiro on the following possession cut the Dons advantage to, 40-34.

After Tyler Williams converted a pair of free throws, Finn Sullivan stole the ball from USF as it tried to bring the ball up the court and finished with a left-handed layup to make it a four-point game.

A layup by Pineiro with 9:42 to play tied the game at 40-40. Massalski knocked down a pair of free throws to complete the 21-6 run and give the Toreros their first lead of the game since their 2-0 lead to start the game.

The Toreros continued its relentless rally and stretched its lead to 10 on a tough finish in the lane by Pineiro who was fouled on the play. He converted the free throw to put USD up 57-47 with 4:39 remaining.

USF closed the gap to four points with 1:24 on the clock and made it a three-point game twice in the final 11 seconds. However, Pineiro and Calcaterra combined to hit three-of-four free throws to seal the victory.

The Toreros will look to continue their momentum as they return to the road for the next three games, beginning at Gonzaga on Saturday at 5 p.m. PT.
