Strong Start Not Enough Against No. 7 UCLA

Toreros win doubles point, get swept in singles

LOS ANGELES – San Diego won the doubles point but was swept in singles play by No. 7 UCLA, as the Toreros fell 4-1 on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Toreros (2-1) got off to a great start against its first top-10 opponent of the season with Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren defeating the Bruins (2-0) Ben Goldberg and Govind Nanda, 6-4.

Guus Koevermans and David Norfeldt delivered the doubles point in dramatic fashion, rallying back from a 6-5 deficit to win 7-6 (8-6) against Connor Rapp and Patrick Zahraj.

The Toreros ran into trouble during singles play with the Bruins winning four matches in straight sets.

Norfeldt was the lone Torero to send his match to a third set, earning a 6-3 decision in the second set against Goldberg. However, the match was halted tied at 1-1 after UCLA earned the match-clinching point.

USD will look to bounce back next week when it heads to the Pacific Northwest for matches at Oregon and Portland.
