Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#16 Toreros Dispatch UCLA, 4-1

San Diego scores four goals for the third game in a row

LOS ANGELES – Miguel Berry and Alex Churness scored two goals apiece, including one each in the first two minutes of the game, to lead No. 16 San Diego men's soccer to a 4-1 win at UCLA on Thursday at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

The Toreros (10-1-1), who remain a perfect 5-0 in road games this season, scored their first two goals on their initial two shots in the first 126 seconds of the match thanks to quick triggers by Berry and Churness. The senior and sophomore added their second goals in the 34th and 56th minutes, respectively.

The convincing victory over the Bruins (5-6-2) already gives USD its first 10-win season since 2015. The Toreros still have six games left in the regular season.

USD's four-goal game was also its third in as many games, making it the first time the Toreros had three consecutive games with at least four goals in each since 1990.

The two goal game by Berry was his fourth multi-goal effort of the season while it was Churness' first of his career. The two have combined for nine of the Toreros' 12 goals in the last three games.

Berry wasted little time getting USD on the scoreboard as the Poway, Calif. product gave the Toreros a 1-0 lead 76 seconds into the game. About 40 seconds later, with the Bruins already in a state of shock after the first goal, Churness recorded an unassisted tally to make it 2-0 after just over two minutes into the game.

After UCLA started to gain momentum with its goal in the 18th minute, the Toreros went on the counterattack. In the 34th minute, USD forced a Bruin turnover and Berry converted it into his second goal to make it 3-1.

Later in the 56th minute, the Toreros forced another turnover and Berry found Churness, who turned the pass into a goal that made it 4-1.

Berry almost found himself a hat trick on a few occasions in the second half, including in the 71st when his free kick glanced off the woodwork and nearly made it a four-goal USD advantage.

Berry finished with five points to extend his point streak to five games. He has 16 points over the stretch and 31 on the season, which are the most by a Torero since 2002.

USD had 12 shots in the game, including eight on goal. Eight of the shots, six on goal, came in the first half.

Defensively, the Toreros allowed eight shots, three on goal, as goalkeeper Matt Wiher made two saves.

With regular season nonconference action now complete, the Toreros enter their biggest match of the season on Sunday when they face No. 9 Saint Mary's (10-1-0, 1-0 WCC) in Moraga at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on the WCC Network.
