SAN DIEGO – All in straight set fashion, three Toreros –
Nico Borter,
Sacchitt Sharrma and
Marvin Schaber – won their semifinals matches on Saturday at the Aztec Fall Invitational to advance to Sunday's finals.
Borter (6-1, 6-3 vs. Eric Hahn) and Sharrma (6-3, 6-3 vs. Max Wild) each topped opponents from UCLA while Schaber (6-1, 6-1) defeated Alex Scemanenco from the tournament host SDSU.
The finals appearances are the first of the fall for any Torero in the main draw this year.
"We looked more comfortable on court today in singles," said USD head coach
Ryan Keckley. "I was happy with how we fought and competed overall. We still have a lot of work to do to be ready for the upcoming spring season, but this was definitely a step in the right direction for this program. I'm looking forward to see Marvin, Sach and Nico compete in the finals of each of their draws."
The Toreros combined for four singles wins on Saturday as
David Norfeldt won his consolation match 6-3, 6-1 over Can Franke from Grand Canyon. USD has 11 singles wins total in the tournament so far.
In doubles, Borter and Sharrma picked up the first win of the weekend when they took down Arizona's duo of Conner Olsen and Hiroki Sakawaga 6-3. The victory was a bounce back from a loss earlier in the day to Prost and Diguilio of LMU.
All three finals matches for the Toreros start at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Schaber will face Jules Auffray of SDSU in the State flight, Borter vs. Nick Lagaev of Arizona in the Aztec flight, and Sharrma against Olsen of Arizona in the Warrior flight.
