OGDEN, Utah – Behind 21 points from
Joey Calcaterra and 10 apiece from
Braun Hartfield and
James Jean-Marie, San Diego earned in its second win in three days with a 71-56 victory at Weber State on Thursday at the Dee Events Center.
The Toreros (2-2), who led for nearly three-fourths of the game, used hot second-half shooting to turn in their first road win of the year. They shot 58.1% (18-of-31) in the final 20 minutes, including 45.5% from three-point range (5-of-11).
San Diego finished 28-of-56 (50%) from the field for the game, its best shooting performance of the season.
Calcaterra matched his season-high in points – a high-water mark he set two days ago against Fresno State – by sinking 72.7% of his shots (8-of-11), including four threes on six attempts. The redshirt sophomore also had five assists and a steal.
Hartfield, who reached double-figures points for the third time this year, added six rebounds and four assists to go with his 10 points. Jean-Marie nearly had a double-double for the second game in a row as he grabbed nine rebounds.
The Toreros held Weber State (0-2) under 40% from the field (38.7%) and forced the Wildcats into 14 turnovers. Seven of the eight Toreros who logged minutes had one of USD's 10 steals, led by
Marion Humphrey's career-high four.
Calcaterra and
Jared Rodriguez carried the Toreros in the early going, combining to score the first 10 points with five apiece to make it 10-8 nine minutes in. The Wildcats scored 10 of the next 13 points, though, lifted by Cody John and his five points to give them an 18-13 lead with just under six minutes left in the first. John finished the game with a team-high 20 points.
With the shooting of
Alex Floresca, the Toreros grabbed the lead once again with less than three minutes remaining in the first half. The redshirt senior made it 20-18 when he drained a wide-open three from the top of the key at the 2:57 mark. After
Noel Coleman's three-pointer was answered by a three from John, Floresca nailed a floater from inside the paint to give the Toreros' a 25-23 lead going into halftime.
Weber State made it a one-point game after three minutes into the second half, but the Toreros never trailed after halftime and eventually stretched their lead to double-digits with the help of a three-pointer by Jean-Marie at 12:11.
Ignited by a steal and subsequent dunk by Humphrey that made it 51-41 at the 7:52 mark, the Toreros made five straight shots over the course of three minutes to take a 15-point lead. The advantage swelled as high as 17 when Humphrey finished an old-fashioned three-point play with three minutes left in the game.
USD continues its road trip in the Mountain Time Zone as it will play at Colorado on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT.
