SEATTLE – Washington shot 57% from the field and outscored San Diego by 18 points in the paint as the Toreros lost their third game in a row, 88-69, at #25 Washington on Sunday at the Alaska Airlines Arena.
USD (2-5) dropped its second game in as many tries against a top-25 team on the road this season after the Huskies (5-1) sank 33 field goals on their 57 attempts and scored 46 points – to San Diego's 28 – in the paint. The Toreros led on four occasions in the first half, including by two with under six minutes left, but the high-efficiency shooting by Washington proved to be too much.
Washington (5-1) was led by three players in double-digits, including 25 from Isaiah Stewart, 20 from Jaden McDaniels and 16 by Nahziah Carter. The three combined for 61 points on 63% shooting (24-of-38).
Unable to slow down Washington on the defensive side of the court, the Toreros still managed to turn in their second-best shooting effort of the season. The USD offense made 26 of its 58 shots to finish 44.8% from the field.
Marion Humphrey was the leading producer of offense for the Toreros as he scored 13 points on 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-3 beyond the arc.
The redshirt freshman point guard was joined in double-digits by
Jared Rodriguez, who turned in a season-high 12, and
Alex Floresca, who scored eight of his season-high 10 points in the second half.
Finn Sullivan had a trio of three-pointers to give him nine points off the bench. The sophomore also recorded four assists, three steals and three rebounds in 24 minutes.
The Toreros led for portions of the first half and overcame a seven-point deficit with less than nine minutes remaining when sparked by a jumper by Rodriguez that not only beat the expiring shot clock but drew a foul. Rodriguez sank the free throw to finish the three-point play and allow the Toreros to score 11 of the next 13 points over a three-minute stretch to eventually take a 23-21 advantage with 5:37 left.
San Diego made five of its last seven field goals in the first half, but a 12-2 run by Washington to close out the first made it an 11-point deficit, 41-30, for the Toreros entering the break.
In the second half, a three-point play converted by Humphrey two-and-a-half minutes in pulled the Toreros within six at 43-37. The Huskies, however, went on an impressive run of shooting by making 12 of their next 13 shots to establish the score at 72-50 with under 10 minutes left.
Washington led by as much as 28 with around three-and-a-half minutes remaining, but four points each by
Sabry Philip and
Mikal Gjerde over the final moments chipped away at the deficit.
San Diego will return home and open the Boca Raton Beach Classic with a school-site game against Hofstra on Wednesday. The tip-off inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion is set for 7 p.m.
