SAN DIEGO - Angelica Sheils earned the first start of her collegiate career on her Senior Night as San Diego (7-9-1, 3-5 WCC) beat Pacific (3-15, 0-8 WCC) 1-0 on Wednesday night at Torero Stadium.
Sheils, a four-year player for San Diego, started in net for the Toreros and was solid throughout the first 45. The Alexandria, Va. native held Pacific scoreless, collecting a save in the 37th minute on the Tigers' lone shot of the half.
"There's people on teams that feel like the glue that holds everyone together and she is one of those people for us," said head coach
Louise Lieberman. "Some of the words I would use to describe her are: friendship, loyalty, and intense generosity. When you have that as a part of your team, it just elevates your whole squad."
Both teams fought for possession early in the first before San Diego began to control the ball past the midfield. Midfielder
Halle Walls broke through for the Toreros in the 33rd minute as connecting off a cross from
Sydney Hopkins to find the back of the net. The goal marks Walls third multi-point match in 2019.
Kayla Ngai,
Michaela Foster, and
Milan Moses looked to add to the score, missing just wide.
San Diego looked to breakthrough in the second with early shots from Ngai,
Natalie Copenhaver and
Katie Lapomarda that were saved and blocked to keep the lead down to one.
Pacific tried to tack on the equalizer throughout the second 45, tying the Toreros in shots (7) during the period.
Amber Michel collected her lone save of the match in the 75th minute to keep the Tigers off the board.
The Toreros will finish out WCC play on Saturday night with a matchup at Portland. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (PT).
"I'll look for us to close out strong and represent who we are," said Lieberman. "I want us to be proud of our performance."
