LOS ANGELES – Junior
August Holmgren earned three of San Diego's four wins on Friday at the 63rd Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships as the junior advanced to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles.
No. 57 Holmgren moved on with a 6-4, 6-4 win over BYU's Matheus Leite and 6-3, 7-5 victory against UCLA's Eric Hahn. After missing most of the fall due to injury, No. 57 Holmgren has yet to drop a set this year as he now stands 7-0 in singles.
Holmgren will face Mandresy Rakotomalala of Arizona State in the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The winner between the No. 1 seed (Holmgren) and No. 8 seed (Rakotomalala) will play in a semifinal match at 3 p.m.
Prior to his singles match on Saturday morning, Holmgren and freshman
Marvin Schaber will compete in the quarterfinals of the doubles draw at 10 a.m. The Toreros take on the tournament's No. 1 seed Bradley Frye and Ryder Jackson of USC after winning 8-3 over Gardiner Perotti and Michael Smith of SMU on Friday.
In other singles action,
David Norfeldt advanced out of the Round of 32 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over BYU's Samuel Tullis, but the redshirt junior fell in straight sets in the Round of 16 against Filip Malbasic of Arizona 6-4, 6-4.
Freshmen Schaber and Sacchitt Sharram, meanwhile, lost in the opening round of singles play. Schaber reached the main draw after winning his qualifiers on Thursday.
"We didn't have our best today," said USD head coach
Ryan Keckley. "A lot of good things individually, but at the same time, a lot of items we need to address moving forward. We have to find more of our inner dog when the moment arrives and be willing to bite instead of just barking all day. We backed away from these opportunities and let them pass us by. Tomorrow is another day to get better and we will take full advantage of it."
In the singles consolation bracket, Schaber already sits in the quarterfinals after he moved on due to a walkover against Derek James of Biola. Sharrma, meanwhile, takes on Jack Barnett of BYU at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
