Turnovers Hurt Toreros in 74-62 Loss

San Diego fell one shy of its school-record in turnovers

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore Joey Calcaterra scored a career-high 20 points but San Diego committed 29 turnovers and fell at Long Beach State 74-62 on Saturday in the Walter Pyramid.

The Toreros (0-2) lost their first game on the road this season despite keeping it close until the final 10 minutes and overcoming the turnovers, which fell one short of the most in school history. They had 16 turnovers in the first half but only trailed by three, 37-34.

Calcaterra had four three-pointers and shot 5-of-12 from the field (41.7%) to put up the first 20-point effort of the season for the Toreros. The guard also had two assists and a rebound.

Redshirt sophomore Jared Rodriguez, in his first game as a Torero, joined Calcaterra in double-figures with 11 points (5-of-11 FG) and five rebounds. Rodriguez, a transfer from Idaho, had his waiver approved by the NCAA on Friday afternoon to clear him to play.

As a team, USD shot 48% from the field in the first half, but finished the game at 38.9%. Calcaterra had 12 of his points in the second half, but his trio of three-pointers were six of the nine shots made by the Toreros in the final 20 minutes.

The Toreros out-rebounded the Beach (1-1), 38-35, led by junior James Jean-Marie's 12 boards. The forward added nine points.

USD held the lead for the first nine minutes of the game as five different Toreros registered a basket. However, with just over 11 minutes left in the first half, LBSU took the lead with a hook shot by Drew Cobb to make it 15-14.

While the Toreros never regained the lead in the first half, they kept it close. Trailing by as much as seven points, a free throw by Calcaterra after LBSU was called for its second flop of the game helped ignite a run that eventually brought it to 29-27 at the 4:50 mark. The lead went on to swell again to five, but a layup by Braun Hartfield and free throws by Marion Humphrey helped send the Toreros into the break trailing by three.

USD was within one after a steal and subsequent layup by Rodriguez at 15:50 in the second half, but the deficit grew to double-digits for the first time three minutes later when Chance Hunter, who scored a game-high 21 points, hit a three-pointer.

The Toreros made it single digits again on a Jean-Marie dunk with 5:20 remaining, but LBSU quickly made it 67-56 less than 30 seconds later with a jumper by Hunter.

The Toreros return home for their next contest, a 7 p.m. matchup against Fresno State in the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Tuesday.
