Toreros Take City Championship

San Diego never trailed in the 70-47 win against SDSU

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego (5-4) never trailed on the way to a 70-47 victory against SDSU (4-7), helped by a solid defensive outing on the road on Wednesday night. The win marks the largest victory against the Aztecs since the 2016-17 season.

The San Diego defense was a problem in Wednesday's game, forcing 20 Aztec turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor. Myah Pace led the way individually with five steals, one shy of tying her season-high. Pace currently leads the West Coast Conference in takeaways.

Senior Madison Pollock was potent against the Aztecs, scoring 19 points for a new season-high and pulling down seven rebounds. Two more Toreros recorded double figures on the night with Sydney Hunter contributing 14 points and four steals, and Pace chipping in 12 points and six rebounds.

San Diego's offense crashed the glass well, pulling down 20 offensive boards to rack up 16 second chance points. Four Toreros contributed at least five rebounds on the night as USD collected 44 rebounds in the contest.

The Toreros started off strong, putting together a 16-12 lead heading into the second quarter. San Diego did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 16 points close to the basket.

San Diego continued to build off its advantage in the second with a clutch three from Pollock at the top of the key to put the Toreros up by six with four minutes remaining. The Toreros maintained their lead and entered halftime with a 31-27 edge.

The Toreros never looked back after halftime building a 7-0 run with five minutes to go in the third to preserve their lead to make it 41-30. San Diego entered the fourth with an 11-point advantage, forcing six SDSU turnovers.

The fourth quarter opened with a 15-0 run, finished off by a jumper from Hunter, to grow the lead to 62-36 with five minutes left in the contest. San Diego took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 23 points in the paint.

The Toreros are back in action on Sunday, when they'll take on Washington at 2 p.m. (PT) at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
