SAN DIEGO—San Diego used a productive second inning to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 6-2, on Tuesday evening at Fowler Park.
The Toreros (15-6, 1-2 WCC) jumped out to an early lead in the second inning, batting through the lineup and collecting five runs on three hits and a Titans (8-10) error to take the 5-0 lead.
After
Jeff Houghtby drew a leadoff walk and stole second,
Caleb Ricketts hit an RBI single up the middle to give USD a 1-0 lead. The Toreros loaded the bases with one out and
Paul Kunst hit another single back up the middle to score Ricketts from third.
San Diego added three more runs after
Cody Jefferis brought in
Stephen Dubb on an RBI groundout to the second baseman and a costly throwing error from the Titans shortstop allowed two more the cross to give USD the 5-0 lead.
The Titans retired the next nine batters is order but solid performances from the San Diego pitching staff helped the Toreros maintain the lead.
Freshman righthander
Noah Owen got the start for USD, pitching four innings and giving up just three hits with one walk, one hit batter and four strikeouts. The combination of Owen and
Louie Crow held the Titans scoreless through seven innings.
Crow (1-0) was credited with the win for USD after pitching 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
CSUF was able to break through in the top of the eighth inning after an error by Crow on an attempted pickoff at second put a runner on third with no outs. A sacrifice flyout to right field made it a 5-1 game and the Titans threatened more, loading the bases with one out.
A second Torero error allowed one more run to score before the Titans grounded into a double play to end the rally.
San Diego answered in the bottom of the eighth when Chris Coloarossi singled down the right field line to score Houghtby from second and cement the victory.
The Toreros remain home for a three-game conference series with San Francisco beginning Friday at 6 p.m. PT.
