SAN DIEGO – San Diego earned its second sweep of the season and eighth consecutive victory, defeating Portland 4-0 to open WCC play on Friday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.

The Toreros (10-2, 1-0 WCC) cruised past the Pilots (6-6, 1-2 WCC), winning the doubles point and three singles points in straight sets.

Maria-Paula Torres provided the clinching point for USD with a 6-0, 6-4, victory at No. 5.

The Toreros got off to a great start with
Kati Kukaras and
Gemma Garcia blitzing Portland at No. 3, 6-0, to give USD an early edge.

Torres and
Solymar Colling had to grind out their match at No. 1 early but pulled away to earn a 6-3 victory and put the Toreros up, 1-0.

USD continued to roll in singles play, winning the first set on five of six courts.

Kukaras won her first set 6-1 and was in control of the match at No. 4 before her opponent had to retire due to injury.

Maria Tyrina put the Toreros up 3-0 with a decisive 6-0, 6-4, win at No. 6. Torres provided the finishing touches shortly after with a win at No. 5 to deliver USD's 10th victory in the past 11 matches.
