SAN DIEGO – No. 39 San Diego grinded out a 4-3 victory against Gonzaga and Toreros head coach Sherri Stephens earned her 400th career victory on Sunday evening at the Hogan Tennis Center.
 
Stephens, who took over the program in 1984 and is in her 36th season as head coach, added another milestone to her illustrious career with her 400th career victory.
 
The Toreros (11-2) had to work for the victory after falling behind early and going to three sets in five-of-six singles matches. Kati Kukaras ensured USD's win with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, victory at No. 4 to clinch the 4-3 result.
 
The Toreros have won nine matches in a row and 11 of their past 12.
 
Kukaras and Gemma Garcia got USD off to a strong start in doubles play with a 6-1 victory at No. 3. The Bulldogs (6-8) leveled the match with a win at No. 2 but Maria-Paula Torres and Solymar Colling clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 1.
 
The lead would not last, however, as Gonzaga won the first two singles matches at No. 2 and No. 6 to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Garcia tied the match 2-2 by earning a comeback win against Domnique Garley at No. 3, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-3. The Toreros retook the lead, 3-2, when Colling earned a win at No. 1 against Sophie Whittle, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
 
The Bulldogs leveled the match at 3-3 with a win at No. 5 but Kukaras followed shortly after with the deciding point to secure the victory for the Toreros.
 
USD concludes its four-match homestand next weekend when it plays host to BYU on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT.
